Turntable Needle Cleaning

turntable …..? massive repair
I recently found the old record player of my father in the attic. It was very dusty, but I cleaned it up, only to discover that it did not work at all. When turned on, not turn, and in fact nothing happens at all. All switches seem to be caught, except the switch ignition. The only answer I can get from it is when you turn, drops the needle. Is there someone with more knowledge on the subject I have a suggestion (Or should I just buy a new one)?
Depending on the age and type of this player, some have valves in them, others have capasitor `s` s & resistances which could be burned in any event, unless you plan to return to use or maintain it as enduring love, I would have on others as one could be very expensive to restore, but if you get rid of it, you can find a dealer who would buy it out for decent money bin not only because it would be a piece more about the history down the drain …………………………..
