What is a RIAA amplifier and Why should I use?
Most dishes are independent require a preamplifier to boost the signal so that you can burn an acceptable level. Some dishes, especially those who are accommodated in hi-fi units, will have an integrated amplifier, but for most professional decks, or dishes DJ, a preamplifier is needed. The choice of the preamplifier is crucial. I could go into a deep explanation on the capacitance, hum, LF and impedance, etc, but that confuse you at this time. What I will say is that the following will save you much heartache and make life much easier.
Years ago, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) established what is known as compensation rules. The previous result RIAA has been built into every hi-fi amplifiers and stereo RCA inputs or turntable since. In case you using a swivel, to a mixer or independent, which has no built-in RIAA preamp, then you should get one. Now, here is where technical managers sometimes have a heated debate. Do you apply RIAA equalization in the preamp stage or after using the software applications? Take my word for it, always apply RIAA equalization in the analog stage, the prior, not after. This will ensure good strong signal and active, with a wide margin.
Most vinyl is made with what we call pre-emphasis, a kind of EQ to tame the amount of low frequency energy recorded on the disc. This pre-emphasis then has to be corrected with what is known as the RIAA curve, which boosts the low end and reduces the high end so that a total frequency response flat panel displays.
In addition, the output signal then needs amplification and RIAA correction.
In today's world of gender sampling is essential to have an industry standard power amplifier signal tp approved turntable. Use only approved RIAA amps, or similar in the specification, the integrity and quality of the signal being amplified is as important as the signal chain passes through.
