Has anyone connected a turntable to a Mac and had problems?

I bought a turntable and the software was for PC only so I had to download the audacity free software. Is it using the standard USB cable or a cable that goes into the audio input on the back of my Mac? The dish I bought it to connect to a computer, so it's not your turntable stereo standard. But for some reason I was not getting any music sent to my computer when I use the USB cable. I have not tried the audio input jack yet. I want to know what to do before going to buy one. Also "Plato" is not going up as the selection in Audacity software? Hmm, this becomes a bit confusing. Thanks!
