Dj Wedding Playlists

Any have Ipod instead of DJ?
Im very nearly positive Im going to do the Ipod thing, in reality laptop, Ive heard its easier for cueing things. Aside from the cost, I have never been a fan of wedding DJ’s even the classest one Ive seen still seems a little like a used car salesman. My fiance are tech savvy enough, for making the playlists, burning back up cds, we undestand we will need cocktail hour, dinner hour playlists, We have at least three different friends who we trust who have enough stage presence to make announcements as necessary. What I we are not certain of is the audio system, our hall has no internal PA system, as side from the playback device, what did you need in terms of speakers, mikes, any sorts of faders to switch between, mic and music, wires, did you rent, if so how much, did you own or borrow, if borrow, form who, I have friends of friends in bands no Djs, might they have some of these things?
Bottom line it….what do I need and how much will it be?
You will need a PA, a mixer, a microphone (maybe with a stand), the laptop, and all the right cables to hook everything up. Sometimes you can get by without the mixer, but most laptops don’t have the right aux outputs to go to the PA and/or there are serious problems with the internal computer background noise (sounds like static with some high pitched buzzing). Check with your venue and see if they have any of the equipment or if they have preferred vendors for the equipment rentals. If they don’t have any advice, call around to rental companies. In my area we have a company called Honeywell Rentals that carries all that stuff (and just about anything else you could think of). Another idea is to check big music stores; some may have audio equipment for rent. And to be safe, buy the damage insurance. If you hook up something wrong you can blow the equipment in a couple short seconds. Some of your band friends might have some of the stuff, probably a PA at least. I’d also suggest designating someone (a techie from the wedding party or a relative) who will help out with the music, just making sure everything is smooth sailing. Good luck!
