Being a DJ/DJ-ing Questions?
Im wondering how is it being a DJ?Im 15 (turning 16 this year),so would it take me a while to learn everything?or at least just the basics?
What do you think is essential to learn?On average,how much do the sets/turntables/equipment cost?What do I need to get?Do I need to hook anything up to a good computer or something?Is it complicated?Starting out,how much do you get paid as a Dj?And if you are really good,how much would you normally be paid?
And I plan on probably being an Audio Engineer when Im older,so do these two jobs (Audio Engineer and DJ) closely related?And are they also closely related to being a Music Producer?

I’m not a real DJ, I only played publicly couple of times from my laptop, but perhaps I can give you some advice. First, start building a database of tracks you would like to play right now, it is a long, neverending process and the sooner you start it the sooner you will be to play for couple of hours (you may think that just because you know lots of good music, it shouldn’t be a problem to play for couple of hours, but believe me, if you sort you collection and pick out the best floorkillers, you will do a much better job). About the equipment, turntables are cooler and more comfortable for sure, but to get started, nice software package will do. I use Virtual DJ software which is absolutely brilliant, it has two virtual decks you can even scratch, it automatically matches BPM of tracks, enables you to kill bass, mids, or trebles on both tracks, crossfade them, use real time effects (flangers, filters, key changers, gradual slowing down until stop, you name it), play short samples in your songs very easily, it’s just brilliant. I would start from there, you can then upgrade to real turntables (or the ones where you load mp3s) or you can buy specialized hardware extension for virtual DJ and adjust the sound much quicker through real buttons (you can use both hands to perform two actions so it’s much better). Don’t know anything about the stuff like money you get paid, but being a DJ can be (but not necessarily must be) related to being Audio Engineer, it certainly helps understanding audio processing, I for one like to make my own mash-ups which makes it more enjoyable for me. And yeah, I highly recommend using Mix Station sv 4 skin which has tons of features. Very good is also Mixed in Key software which will analyze your track and define their bpm and key, which is great for flawless mixing. Just try and you’ll see. Good luck!
