So, You Think You Can Be A DJ? Read This!
You have to admit…there aren’t that many skills cooler than being a DJ. Everybody there is hanging on your every scratch. So, you have to do this right. Well, I’m going to share with you the three things that are going to DOOM you from the start if you don’t nail them.
Let’s begin with probably the most important…where and how you learn. I am going to say this only once and I’m not going to repeat it. You will not learn to DJ from reading books. I don’t care how well written they are. DJ’ing is a visual skill. The ONLY way to really nail the technique is by watching videos. You have to actually see what’s being done or you’re screwed before you begin. Heed this warning for what it’s worth to you.
Another frequent mistake is using a friend’s tables. Let me tell you something, DJ’ing is an art and part of that art is the equipment you use. It has to fit to YOUR style and YOUR core. You’re never going to get the sound that you want out of a friend’s gear. When you practice, you MUST train on your OWN equipment if you’re going to get ahead at all.
Lastly, there is the issue of buying cheap equipment. Yeah, I understand you’re on a budget. With the current economy, we’re all broke. I get it. But let me tell you, buying cheap equipment is a sure fire way to kill your livelihood. Why? Because not only does cheap equipment sound cheap, it’s also not very dependable. Imagine working a show and your turntable goes south on you. How do you think you’re going to feel when that happens? It is essential that you have the absolute best equipment that your money can buy or don’t even waste your time.
