Why Wont My Turntables Play?
ok so I have a Numark iM1.

I have hooked up everything to the mixer
1.) Left Turntable
–Audio Output Cables = Phono Input (RCA) CH1
–Ground Wire = Grounding Terminal CH1
2.) Right Turntable
–Audio Output Cables = Phono Input (RCA) CH2
–Ground Wire = Grounding Terminal CH2
3.)House Amp
–RCA cables = Master Output (RCA)
And all of thethe power cords to all of the
but for some reason I cant hear any sound out of the speakers. It might be the Grounding Terminal, cause in the instructions it doesn’t really show you how to hook the cord on the turntable to the Grounding terminal, so I just screwed it on there.
If ANYONE can, PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!! : )

Right, I’ll work from potential problems with your turntables, through to ones with the mixer, through to your amp and so on. Some of these questions might sound a bit daft, but they’re all common mistakes to make, so here goes. Just consider this as a walk through for setting up DJ’ing equipment. I can’t see all the precise details on the picture of your equipment, but they are all fairly standard. If everything else is working okay, as in you’re getting music through your headphones, but not through your speakers, just skip onto the Mixer To Amp bit.
Turntables.
- Are your needles actually touching the vinyl? Sometimes they have protective covers on.
- Is there a lever for your tone arm? Is it all the way down?
- Is the weight at the opposite end of your tone arm from the needles set to the right position? If it’s at 1, turn it to 3 or until the needles feel heavy when you lift them up.
- Is there an anti – skipping wheel close to where the weight on your tone arm is? If so, turn it up as high as it will go.
- It sounds like you’ve got the wires hooked up to your mixer properly, but just to check, you’ve got the colours matching (white to white, red to red or sometimes it’s yellow to yellow).
- If your ground leads aren’t connected properly, you will still be able to hear the music, but there will be a buzzing sound over the top of it.
Mixer
- Sometimes there are two set of inputs at the back of your mixer (phono and line). You say you have your turntables plugged into phono. Are there switches to toggle between phono (PH) and line (LN) at the back of your mixer? If so, make sure they’re turned to PH, not LN.
- Sometimes there are switches on the front of the mixer to toggle between phono and line too. They’re usually above the volume control for each channel. Make sure they’re set to PH, not LN.
- Have you got all the volume controls on your mixer turned up? On mine, there is volume for each channel and gains (left and right turntable), cue (your headphones), master (your main volume mixer), balance (left and right) and booth (alternative output) as well as your eq’s. Whatever is on yours, turn it to five, put it half way up or set it to the middle. Put your headphones on and play a record. You should hear something through the headphones. If not, go over the steps again.
Mixer to Amp
- You’ll have at least one output from the back of your mixer (probably Master), but maybe one or two more (like Booth or Record). Make sure the RCA cable that you are connecting to your amp is plugged into the main one (Master, Main or whatever it’s called).
- This is probably where you’re having difficulty. The RCA cable going from the Master Output on your mixer should be going into the Aux In input on the back of your amp, nowhere else. It will probably be called Aux / Aux In / Aux Input / Auxilliary Input. That’s where you need to be plugging it into.
- One final thing. I don’t know what kind of amp set up you have, but there should be a switch, wheel or button on it somewhere that changes the mode from ‘CD’ to ‘Tape’ to ‘Radio’ to ‘Aux / Auxilliary / Input / Something else like that’. Make sure it is set to the last one. It’ll either be on a little screen, or on a dial that you turn. This is telling your amp what it should play to the speakers – if it’s set to ‘CD’, it won’t emit sound coming through your Aux In (i.e your decks and mixer).
Hope this helps and if it still doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll see what else I can do. A picture of the back of your Amp, showing all the inputs, outputs and other connectors might be useful. These things are never easy to do the first time, so it could be a combination of things.
