Everyone Should Join A Book Club!
Back in November a friend of a friend decided to start a book club, when my friend asked me to go along with her i was a bit apprehensive and didn’t really know what to expect. When the first book meeting came around i found myself in a room with my friend and six complete strangers and my first thought was “what the hell am i doing here?”. First of all i have two small children and barely get time to flick through a magazinethese days let alone read an entire book by a designated deadline and secondly i was in the company of seven school teachers who were very well read and real ‘book people’ you know the type who read two books per week!
At the first meeting we spent the evening introducing ourselves and getting to know each other and what sorts of books we like to read, after the first ten minutes or so i felt completely relieved and comfortable with these people. Each member of our book club is a totally different character and we all enjoy very different types of literature which makes for very interesting meetings. Each month we decide on a title from a different genre, we do this by each choosing a title writing it down on paper and putting them all into a hat then pulling one out. We usually meet up once every four weeks, our meetings are hosted by whoever submitted the chosen title which is fab because we all take food and drink to the designated house and have a girls (& one boy) night in discussing what we liked and disliked about the chosen book! It’s great because it pushes you to read books that you normally wouldn’t have even given a second look, i know from my short experience that I’ve already thoroughly enjoyed a couple of books that before book club i wouldn’t have even picked up. Over the months we have become a group of good friends of all different ages who (and i think i can speak for all of them) look forward to our meetings and to catching up on the months events, there is always one of us with a story to tell.
I would urge anyone who has ever thought about joining a book club or for that matter anyone who is interested in literature to go ahead and join a book club or even start one up yourself! All you need to do is get a few friends interested and get each of them to bring a friend along with them and hopefully if you’re as lucky as we were you will end up with a book club full of friends and have a fun night in once a month!!!
Books our book club have read so far:
