The Universal Exposition held in Paris in 1867 must have been a sight to behold. The main building was nearly two football fields in length, containing a central pavilion topped by a dome and surrounded by a garden. More than 50,000 exhibitors show in more than 100 buildings. Among the 400 exhibitors were manufacturers piano, all competing for the gold medals that would ensure the dominance of its brands future of the world piano market.

Enthusiasm for the four models of piano appears for Steinway & Sons in New York was overwhelming. Steinway won two gold medals, backed by European royalty, and the praises of Franz Liszt and other great pianists. The piano Steinway was so popular Weekly Harper's magazine published a cartoon showing the fight crowds to get a Steinway piano. Title of the cartoon read: "Sudden Mania to become pianists created to hear the pianos of Steinway & Sons in the Paris Exhibition."

Such was the popularity Steinway piano in 1869 Matthew Fontaine Maury, then Chairman of the Department of Physics, Virginia Military Institute, he sent two of his daughters to New York to buy a Steinway from his home in Lexington, Virginia. Matthew F. Maury was a former director of the U.S. Naval Observatory and Commodore of the Confederate Navy. He was awarded medals from the leaders European statesmen for their achievements, and honored with the nickname "Pathfinder of the Seas" for its innovative work in ocean currents. Commodore Maury was established in Lexington to pursue their academic interests. When he got home Steinway, Commodore Maury wrote enthusiastically to his son-in-law saying that "it is now piano – all insurance-Smart. Everyone happy with it, and Elie is now what is "talk"! Thank you. "

My introduction to Steinway Maury was almost twenty years ago when I received a call from Keith Gibson, author and executive director of Museum Programs for Virginia Military Institute. Col. Gibson was Maury located the piano, which had been stored for decades under a porch. The piano had been used by Maury family until about 1912, when it was sold the Christian family. In 1991, the Rev. William Christian, whose mother had bought the piano, the instrument provides VMI. generous funding by Dr. J. Battle Haslam, a 1961 graduate of VMI, provided money for restoration. Aware of my experience restoring old pianos, Colonel Gibson asked me to assess the piano for revegetation.

My first impression was that the piano had to be doused with gasoline and burned. The veneer of rosewood was clear from the case, ivory had disappeared from many keys, there was termite damage at the top and legs, the strings were rusty, felts were moth-eaten, and the piano action had been instructed by complete due to mildew in the pivot points of the action. I was aware, however, that this was an instrument of historic significance that had been owned a man of historical importance.

Before accepting a job recovery, first set the customer expectations. Col. Gibson made his expectations clear from the beginning: I did not want a cosmetic cleaning that would be suitable only for display: I wanted to play this instrument. My logic told me: "Run", but my instincts told me it was my piano to restore. Instantly, I do not want anyone else to be in charge of this restoration. This was an opportunity for me to pay tribute to history. This instrument deserves thoughtful and restoration specialist, and was intended to provide just that.

The restoration of an antique piano is similar to the restoration of an old car that restoration of antique furniture. A piano is a machine with thousands of moving parts made of wood. Antiques Roadshow's warning that "refinishing hurt the value" does not apply to pianos. The challenge an old piano is to maintain its historical integrity while ensuring that it will play music. Hippocrates warning "first do no harm" should remain always on the mind of the restorer in the choice of materials and techniques. In consultation with Col. Gibson, a restoration plan was developed.

Restoration lasted over a year. The piano was completely dismantled, thousands of pieces were numbered and labeled. Rare settings were photographed. The chains were sent to a manufacturer String to duplicate. Action felts and fabrics were removed and replaced with care. The plate event was repaired, and parts box were re-plated brass. A block tuning was installed a new pin, and bridges and repair of soundboard. The case was refinished, and then the piano was re-strung, the action of reassembling, and regulated the piano tuned.

The sound of the resulting instrument surprised everyone. Usually, the square pianos have a tone uneven, with overwhelming notes and weak low notes. The Maury Steinway was remarkably, even in the tone of an upright piano. Not surprisingly, Steinway received accolades as the Paris Exhibition 1867.

Due to renovations at the museum, the piano was placed in storage at VMI, to its official opening in June 1995. Dr. Haslam were the first to touch the piano, playing the Navy Hymn Doxology and the options that would have pleased Commodore Maury. After Dr. Haslam, the song "Ashokan Farewell" the subject of the PBS series The Civil War, was performed by Ginny Hutchinson, granddaughter of Commodore Maury.

Almost twenty years after the initial restoration, Maury Steinway remains on display at the Museum of VMI in Lexington. It is occasionally played the piano and care is under the watchful eye of Colonel Gibson. Again, piano Commodore Maury "talk." I'm glad to have played a role in restoring the voice pianos.
