Barnsley is South Yorkshire town with a population of just over 70,000 people. Despite the reputation as a degraded area, Barnsley downtown is home to an impressive array of boutiques and restaurants. Art Galleries
There is only one permanent art gallery in Barnsley, and is the Cooper Gallery in Church Street, opposite the town hall. The gallery features exhibitions of paintings, drawings and watercolors dating from the XVII century XX. The gallery is often home to temporary exhibitions of art and crafts of local and national artists. Admission to gallery is free.
Cannon Hall Museum has a small, permanent display of works of art history, paintings and handicrafts.
For other exhibitions around Barnsley, Wood J + K is a tent structure with a small space dedicated to exhibiting works of art, and the College of Creative Arts Barnsley host a celebration Annual Excellence, showcasing the work of their students.
Theaters
The Barnsley Lamproom Theatre complex is located in a former Methodist church in West Gate, and comprises three theater groups: the Lamproom Theatre Company, Musical Theatre Company Lamproom, and youth theater. The Barnsley Metrodome is a large leisure complex, which includes four swimming pools, squash courts, bowling facilities, a gym, dance studio and Health Room. Athersley Leisure Centre offers gymnastics and athletics, and football training camps on artificial turf. The Dorothy Hyman Stadium has the latest of art athletic facilities and coach. Other leisure facilities include Hoyland Leisure Centre, Leisure Centre and Penistone Royston Leisure Centre.
