Basketball coaching skills: Basketball Coach Book Review by Coach Peterman

Lon Kruger: "The X and O of success" Book Review

Coaches,

I love the Christmas holidays while now, because it gives me time to think, reflect, and redirect my energy on new basketball items such as books and dvds. I had the opportunity to read a book by Lon Kruger and DJ Allen called "The X's and O's of success."

In fact, I knew some of the assistant coaches, Coach Kruger from my days at Blinn College and had met him briefly while I was recruiting on the road. He would not remember the meeting, but I remember that out of his way for a young assistant coach and not "Big-Time" for me at all, unlike many Division 1 coaches.

Coach Kruger proposed a formula for success and trys to get the best for their basketball players and teams. He has done things with dignity and class that is not always associated with the world of sport. He speaks of his principles to take charge of the cultures they seek stability and direction and change to a positive and productive environment. I felt that his book could be applied to the company and the coaching world.

Coach Kruger has made an "art" when it comes to rebuilding the college basketball programs. He does a great job of weaving his own experiences as a basketball coach in examples to show leadership and the ability to improve performance. Coach talks about Texas Pan-American coach men's basketball head / director of athletics at the age of 29, and the appearance elite eight in his second year at Kansas State, a Final Four appearance and team record of 29 victories at the University of Florida, a Big Ten title for Illinois and a Sweet 16 appearance for the "Running the rebels" at UNLV. He also discusses his two and a half years as coach with the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA and how they were fired at midseason. Do not pull the shots in this book.

The chapters of the book cover 39 lessons in life and how to apply leadership in any field of activity or training. Each chapter is divided into three parts: pre-game, game time, and after the game. It is very easy to read the book it has life lessons that everyone can take something from. The lesson of thirty years, here's a quote I love: "Remember, great leaders develop other great leaders. "Simple, honest and true.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

"First lesson: simplicity of success

Pre-game:
It is very simple. Success is a process not an event.

That is not always the most exciting thing to hear. We believe in quick fixes, silver bullets, magic captured in a bottle.

But if you take the time to analyze the vast majority of successful people, organizations, companies or teams, who will find that their overall success is a byproduct of simply doing the right things on a daily basis.

That is the reality we face leaders – the simplicity of success. So how do we deal with something so elementary? How can we affirm this message with our teams in days after day?

Welcome to the challenge of being a leader.

Game Time:
The average fan of college basketball is likely to be surprised knowing how much our coaches is on working with players to develop off the field as well as help them improve in court.

When these young men join our program are usually 18 -, 19 – or 20-years old. Many of them are away from home for the first time.

Some go to scene with a strong work ethic while others lack the notion of hard work. Everything related to their history and surroundings. While you can learn a little about the players during the recruiting process, there are some things you can not find out about people until around every day.

Our goal as a staff is the development of our program for the long-term success.

This means that children in our team who are emotionally, mentally and physically able to perform at its highest level in basketball and in the classroom and socially. We want to maximize the potential of each player in our program.

To do this, start with the basics. We talk to our children about the simplicity of success. "Take care what you have to take care of today," tell them. "If you do day after day throughout his tenure with us, you will succeed and we succeed as a team."

It is the teaching of basic principles, but it is what works. "

title = "Reading lesson …"> Read the lesson in everything. . .

What others say about Coach Kruger and the book:

"Very few coaches have been able to change cultures as quickly and successfully as Lon Kruger. He understands how to shape a group of individuals in a team with a common goal and has shown that time and time again. Lon has high standards for all those around and that has a passion for winning, but not at any price. That is certainly a strong character. "

"Lon Kruger understands business because people understand. The business world was lost in an all-star when Lon went into coaching."

I personally loved the book and are reflected back to him a lot in the next years. It gives you things to think about and if you can take one or two things in the book, then it would be worth as a basketball coach. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars.
