The Midnight Funk Association, the last radio show of the Great
The Midnight Funk Association is 12 am one hour segment of the legendary night Detroit radio DJ Electrifying Mojo, also known as Charles Johnson.
An entire generation of loyal fans and listeners from the 70s through to recognize the early 90's radio show for shaping the musical tastes of listeners in the Detroit metropolitan area, in northern Ohio and eastern Ontario, Canada.
Mojo broke many artists in the Detroit market, including Prince, The J. Giles Band, The B-52's and the public back to classics like Pink legends Floyd, Peter Frampton, the artist never imagined before in the radio stations that were labeled as "black" or "R and B".
Nightly at 12 noon, Mojo kicks off The Midnight Funk Association, an homage to some of the great funk bands of the day and of all time. Often playing the original versions long, and the sides of the album all by George Clinton and Parliament / Funkadelic, Prince, Rick James and many other bands of all time, and artists and local groups and prepare for the World Cup.
At the top of the series, Mojo opened accession to the AMF, and new and old members were asked to stand to show solidarity.
* If you're driving lights flashing.
* If you were at home, turned on the porch light.
* If you are in bed listening to the show, he was required to dance on his back.
And every night for years, people did!
To become a card with members of the AMF, listeners wrote in the radio station and receive their publication AMF identification card.
Electrifying Mojo, and the Association Midnight Funk was one of the last major music radio shows of our time. Many fans credit Mojo radio show for being fans of the music they have never heard of otherwise. He was a big influence on the transformation of millions of listeners in Prince fans, and many say was responsible for a show six sold at Cobo Hall in Detroit in the late 80's.
It is common to talk to fans credit program that will convert them to Peter Frampton, The B-52's, Pink Floyd, and many other artists who have never heard the "Detroit of R and B" stations, however, also supported emerging artists rap like Eric B and Rakim, Run DMC, Whoodini, LL Cool J, and the many styles of music heard in the series if they were fit semmlessly means you can enjoy together.
The sponsors and authors of the Detroit house and techno music, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, now known and respected worldwide as a pioneer, Mojo credit and the Midnight Funk Association as an early influence in his musical development and support often and played their first songs and making history launched Detroit techno to the world as "The Inner Life of the City of Buenos", "Derrick May Strings of Life", "Cybotron Cosmic Cars," model 500 "No UFOs," Technicolor "," R9 "and many others.
Mojo was known to support and embrace electronic music its early stages and frequently played artists like Africa Bambaataa, Kraftwerk, New Order and as part of his radio show at night.
Common segments legendary radio program were:
* 10:00 pm – The landing of the mothership. This was the introduction of each show with spaceship sound effects and related dialog. Sometimes the music heard during the first hour was an indication of what he had heard that night, sometimes it would be completely random.
* 11:00 pm – Awesome '84, '85. In the mid eighties, Mojo played an hour of new music (hence the year in the title) and a bunch of new songs were introduced.
* 11:30 pm – Lover's Lane. A half hour of "slow jams" for lovers.
* 12:00 am – Midnight Funk Association. Was regularly Parliament-Funkadelic, The Gap Band, Zapp and other funk bands of the era.
From 1:00 am to 3:00 am (2:00 a.m. Saturday nights), Mojo's show was different every night. Sometimes, the MFA would extend beyond 1:00 AM, other times Mojo would introduce segments such as:
* Star Wars – A classic "artist vs. artist "set, where Mojo selections will alternate two different groups or artists, and listeners who call to vote for their favorite.
* Travel – Sometimes a multi-night segment, Mojo where they played songs by one artist or group, spanning his entire career. These usually include a mix of successes and obscure songs by that artist.
* Everyone a shout-out – who called the station during his show was the beneficiary of a "shout-out." Set aside for the time it took rattling off the first names of each person who had called for the show.
* 35-35-35 – Mojo would take suggestions from listeners about their favorite artists and bands. Then you choose the three most popular bands of the night and play thirty-five minutes, without commercials, for each group. This segment often gave airtime to groups that no other station Detroit radio play.
At other times Mojo would spend the last 2 hours of their live show showing a mixture of two dishes, to bring local DJs do the same. One such DJ, Jeff Mills, began his career with Mojo as "the magician." Mojo also air music by local groups at this time.
In the Detroit Metro Area, The Midnight Funk Association was more than a night radio show was an event that listeners expect that every night for years.
It was common to see cars flashing their lights at midnight and honking in the streets throughout the city at midnight.
Mojo crossed lines color and do not adhere to a playlist, like today's radio stations prepackaged while broadcasting stations in marketing to the African-American market, his programming was an inspired mix of the best soul, funk, new wave and rock that defied standard formats of radio industry and genres.
He believed that good music has no color, and should not be packed in "Black" stations, and "White" stations, a concept still lost to the owners of the radio station today, and program managers.
Electrifying Mojo and Midnight Funk Association was last of the great radio programs, and the last concert that had any originality and independent thinking away from a playlist or previously structured demographic studies carefully.
Following his love for music and commitment to a level of just playing what was good, something achieved Mojo that radio has failed to do since then. Captures listeners with a cross section of music lovers of all ages, races and Finacial demographic, and create fans andloyal who tuned in simply because they liked the DJ and music.
More recently, Mojo is serving as program director for a handful of stations Detroit radio – not knowing what – and he was in negotiations to bring his show to XM satellite radio in 2006, but so far nothing has been heard about it.
Fans still talk all the legendary radio program, as well as others who have heard about it and what it meant for many, for so long.
For those of us who were there, The Midnight Funk Association will live in our hearts forever and will always be card carrying members.
It really was one of the last great radio programs of our time.
